Joe Phillips scored 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Booker T. Washington High to a 63-54 victory over Beauregard for the championship of the Class 5A, Area 5 Tournament.
With the victory, the Golden Eagles were scheduled to host a sub-regional contest Tuesday (Feb. 13) against Dallas County.
In the win over Beauregard, D.J. Parker added 12 points for BTW. Quintavious Roby scored 18 points and Quatavious 16 for Beauregard.
Loachapoka 49, NHS Girls 43
Loachapoka’s Lady Indians topped rival Notasulga 49-43 on Friday, Feb. 9 to capture the Class 1A, Area championship in a game played at Notasulga.
Kaitlin Hill poured in 27 points for the Lady Indians while Destiny Brown paced Notasulga with a double-double of 14 points and 20 rebounds. Morgan Hunter added 13 points and Tamara Brown added nine points for the Lady Blue Devils.
Lady Devils Defeated in Sub-Regional
The Notasulga Lady Blue Devils were defeated by the Westminster (Oak Mountain) Lions 60-33 at Samford University in Birmingham in the 1A Central Sub-Regional on Monday, Feb. 12.
Westminster never trailed in the game and opened up a commanding 16-5 lead after the first quarter. While the Lady Devils fought hard in the second half, cutting the lead to less than 15 twice, the early edge proved to be the difference.
Leading the Lady Devils was Morgan Hunter with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Walteria Tatum with 11 points. Senior forward Tamara Brown ended her career by contributing five points and three rebounds.
The Lady Devils completed the season 13-9 (3-1 area), tied with Loachapoka for the regular season area title. The Lady Devils finished over .500 for the first time since the 2013-14 season.
For the season, Morgan Hunter led the Lady Devils in scoring at 15.5 points per game (PPG), followed by Destiny Brown at 8.8 PPG and Walteria Tatum at 7.5 PPG.
Destiny Brown led the team in rebounding with 9.6 rebounds per game (RPG), followed by Morgan Hunter with 8.5 RPG and Tamara Brown 6.1 RPG.
Morgan Hunter led the team in assists with 2.7 assists per game (APG), followed by Kemetria Tyson at 1.9 APG, and Andrea Avery at 1.2 APG. Morgan Hunter led the team in steals at 2.8 steals per game (SPG) along with Walteria Tatum at 2.0 SPG.
Destiny Brown lead the team in blocks per game with 2.3 locks per game (BPG) followed by Morgan Hunter with 1.3 BPG. Hunter led the team with eight double-doubles on the season, followed closely by Destiny Brown with seven. Tamara Brown was the only other player to tally a double-double on the season.
The team looks forward to the future with only one senior currently on the roster.
